Jays Win Final Game of Season

The Jefferson City Jays end the season on a bittersweet note. They do so by beating the rival Hickman Kewpies, which dashed Hickman's hopes of going undefeated in District play and advancing to the state quarter-finals, while at the same time Hickman kept the Jays from racking up enough points to upset the Ft. Zumwalt West Jaguars for the District crown.

The Jefferson City Jays may not be moving on, but they finished off the season on a high note.

Late in the fourth quarter on Friday, the Jays scored on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Brad Allen to Cole Boyce to complete a late-game comeback.

Jay Harness went onto boot the PAT, and the Jays spoiled Hickman's chance of a postseason berth with a 33-30 win over the Kewpies in Class 6 District 6 action.

Jefferson City (8-2, 2-1) erased a 30-13 third-quarter deficit when Aaron Terrill scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 4-yard run to make it 30-20 at the 6:58 mark. Terrill then scored on a 1-yard run with 8:46 left in the game to cut the Kewpies' lead to 30-26.

That set up the Jays' final scoring drive, which went 95 yards in 16 plays to seal the game.

Jefferson City outgained the Kewpies 325-294 on the ground, as Terrill led the way for the Jays with 157 yards on 18 carries. Allen chipped in with 109 rushing yards on 17 carries, while he completed 10-of-19 passes for 176 yards.

Desmond Wilson got the Jays on the board with a 4-yard touchdown run at the 4:36 mark in the second quarter.

The Jays cut the Kewpies' lead to 17-13 at the half when Allen hit Boyce with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds remaining in the half.

In a world of hurt

One way or the other, the fourth-ranked Hickman football team was going to be hurting at the conclusion of last night’s Class 6 District 6 game with Jefferson City.

The only thing that would ease the pain of the injuries that sent key starters Rob Heath, Russell Davis and Josh Williams to the sidelines for the entire fourth quarter of the physical battle on Hickman Field would be a win over the archrival Jays.

It didn’t happen.
