Swaying Doubters

In the News:

Columbia Tribune Prep Notes by Rus Baer

Jays now look like champs

My first impression of the Jefferson City football team following the preseason jamboree in August at Hickman Field was that the Jays looked kind of small.

I even wrote as much in this same space for my Prep Notes of Aug. 24, noting that "the Jays sure don’t look very big on the line."

But after watching the fourth-ranked Jays make my high school superhero T.J. Moe appear a mere mortal Friday night during a 44-18 win over fifth-ranked Fort Zumwalt West in a Class 6 quarterfinal at Adkins Stadium, I’m beginning to think Jefferson City might have to make room for another state-championship trophy.

With top-ranked Rockhurst falling 14-9 to second-ranked Blue Springs South (10-2) on Friday, the Jays (9-2) could legitimately be considered the favorite to come away with the Class 6 title.

From where I was standing in the overcrowded Adkins Stadium press box Friday, the Jays looked every bit the part of a state champion.

Hopefully the hoopla and fanfare will not take the teams focus off of each game at hand. As Rockhurst was knocked off and the Jays put aside any questions to there ability by beating Ft. Zumwalt West for a second time, it looks as though it could come down to who wants it more.

If only taking into account the scoring average, it looks as though the Jays could come out winning the game against Blue Springs South 47-32.
