The St. Louis American
State quarterfinals this week for prep football
Get ready St. Louis. The big, bad Jeff City Jays, and their legions of obnoxious fans, are coming to town this weekend. And we expect quite a fight when they get here and take on area-No. 2 DeSmet.
The Jays are one of the deepest and most balanced teams in the state.

27-6 Victory Propels DeSmet Into Semi-Finals Of Playoffs
Apparently not everyone is unlucky on Friday the 13th. In a stunning comeback in front of a huge and enthusiastic home crowd that overwhelmed both their stadium's seating capacity and their school's parking facilities, the DeSmet Spartans continued their unbeaten streak and put together a resounding 27-6 victory over the Jefferson City Jays (9-3).
Chris Adams scored a quick 17 yard field goal, which meant the Spartans were only up by 4 at the half. The game was still well within reach of the Jays. This changed right after the kickoff, when the explosive Malcolm Agnew quickly ran the ball eighty yards down the field for a touchdown. This deflated Jefferson City who spent the rest of the game watching DeSmet launch impressive drives and being flattened by the Spartans' taut defense.
By the game's end, Jefferson City was unable to withstand DeSmet's late-game onslaught. Still, DeSmet's head coach, Patrick Mahoney, praised the performance of his opponents. He said, “They were the toughest team we've played all year. It's a shame their season had to end like that.”

DeSmet Spartans march on toward test in semis
The DeSmet football team found itself in an unusual situation after one quarter of Friday night's Class 6 quarterfinal game against visiting Jefferson City.
The Spartans trailed by six points, which was the first time in a month that the team trailed after one quarter.
After a slow start, DeSmet's defense shut down Jefferson City's running game, and the offense started clicking behind quarterback Steve Kaiser and running back Malcolm Agnew as the Spartans rallied for a 27-6 victory.
"Everybody was making plays when they had to," DeSmet coach Pat Mahoney said.
