District rematches remain a sore spot.
The first week of the new high school football playoff format weeded out a few of the postseason pretenders.
Five area teams bit the dust - four by margins larger than 27 points! - leaving five squads left to represent the Tribune’s coverage area.
On Friday in a Class 6 quarterfinal, fifth-ranked Fort Zumwalt West (9-2) meets fourth-ranked Jefferson City (8-2) in a district rematch of a game the Jays won 56-55 on Oct. 24 in O’Fallon.
The potential for rematches between district champions and district runner-ups in the second round of the playoffs was a common complaint by opponents of the new system, and it will be a common theme this week.
