Another Arkansas Bulldog Up Next - Fayetteville

Looks like it will be Brad vs Brandon. What am I referring to? The QBs for both Jefferson City and Fayetteville have the last name of Allen and the first names are close enough. We'll see how much fun the announcers and fans listening have trying to keep track.

Fayetteville Bulldogs

Season Outlook from MaxPreps:

The Bulldogs are coming off a 9-3-1 season that ended with a 7A state championship, beating Har-ber, who they lost to in the regular season. They graduated three all-state players (including QB Blake McDonald), but they return OL Colby Berna (6-4, 275)--who has verbally committed to Arkansas--and RB/LB Cody Hammer--who was MVP of the state title game. Team speed and depth at the skill positions are strengths, while depth on both lines is a concern. "As the defending state champion, we will have a big bullseye on our back," said head coach Daryl Patton. "We will have to stay healthy on the line, but I think that we will have a chance to defend the title."

Fayetteville won their season opener against the Central Tigers from Little Rock last night by a score of 35-0.

Purple Bulldogs Start Strong

For Fayetteville -- last year's class 7A champions -- just about everything went right Friday as it kicked off the 2008 season against Little Rock Central at Harmon Field. From a near perfect passing game, to a stifling defense, to one heck of a introduction to high school ball by sophomore quarterback Brandon Allen, the Purple Bulldogs showed they are more than ready to make a push for two titles in a row.

"I'll tell you what, that was a great first half," Fayetteville coach Daryl Patton said. "I don't remember any, very few if any mental mistakes. The special teams played well, we had an onsides kick. The defense played well and held them to a shutout. Offensively we had some big plays and I thought Brandon Allen did a good job. He set a school record for touchdown passes tonight, so not bad for your debut."

"We knew coming in they were a good football team and we knew coming in we had some things we had to get better at," Central coach Bernie Cox said. "But I think the first half, the first 22 or 23 minutes tells the story. They had five possessions and they scored on every one of them and then I think they were pretty kind to us in the second half.

"They've got a real good football team and I think they'll play a part in who wins the state championship. Now I think Cabot from our conference is pretty good. But Fayetteville is the defending state champs and they've got a lot of confidence and tonight they played like they were confident."
